A 25 ft by 15 ft mini flower farm at the heart of the Great Pavilion. A working snapshot of a British cutting patch in May, planted as a polyculture and grown the way FftF members grow at home.
What you see is the moment a cut-flower grower lives for: tulips in their last flush, the first ranunculus, wallflowers and sweet rocket for scent, and the soft greens of Alchemilla, Orlaya and Ammi just coming into their own.
The beds are planted as a polyculture. Annuals, biennials, perennials, bulbs and flowering shrubs share the same ground, feeding each other, confusing the pests, and keeping something in bloom from March to November.
This is British flower farming at its most productive, and its most generous to the soil beneath it.
We plan our crops a full year ahead. Seeds sown in summer for spring bulbs, autumn sowings for next year’s biennials, and a succession of direct sowings that carries the season through.
Mixed planting means fewer pests, healthier soil and a longer season. It’s the opposite of a monoculture field and closer to the way a cottage garden works.
No airmiles, no cellophane, no floral foam. Compost from our own beds, water from the roof, and flowers cut at dawn and delivered by hand.
